Many people know about James Clear’s book Atomic Habits. It’s a book about how to get rid of bad habits and create great habits that improve your life. It has helped millions get rid of bad habits and establish new ones.
I love how habits and routines created from habits have improved my life. With better habits, I can get more done in a day and get closer to becoming the person I always believed I could be.
A New App-Atoms
A few days ago, James Clear launched a new phone app called Atoms. This app helps individuals keep track of habits that they want to accomplish and incorporate into their lives. I signed up for the app to check it out. (Fortunately for me, I have an iPhone because as I am writing this post, it is not yet available on Android.)
The app is simple to use. Immediately after downloading, I was requested to create my first habit. the app didn’t let me get away with a generic habit either.
I Started Creating My Habits
This app follows the ideas that Clear expresses in the book. I created a statement where I stated specifically what I wanted to do. The app recommended starting small with something that could be built on later as I made that small task a habit. Next, the app insisted that I include when I wanted to do it, and then that I connect it with something that I already was doing so that I didn’t forget. Finally, I was asked to determine how this habit would change me to be a better person.
The first habit that I created was “I will send one email every morning to one business about my book Gourmet Weeds. I will send this email every day as soon as I open my computer. so that I can become the entrepreneur I want to be.”
A few days later, I wrote down a second habit that I wanted to solidify in my daily habits. This time, rather than adding it to the beginning of my day, I added it to the end of my day “I will plan for tomorrow evening just before brushing my teeth so that I will be an organized productive person.”
Using the Atoms Holds Me Accountable
Every day after that, the app reminds me when completing the habit is due so that I am kept accountable. It also offers a way to connect this app with an accountability person who will also keep me accountable if I want.
Small Daily Lessons
And that’s not all! The app is worth it just for improving the likelihood that habits that we start will stick, but in addition to allowing me to create, keep track of, and remain accountable to the habits that I am trying to create, James Clear includes small daily lessons that are related to habit creation. Some of these lessons include: How to Break a Bad Habit and Replace It with a Good One; You get 25,000 mornings as an Adult, Here are 8 ways to Not Waste Them; How Long Does It Actually Take to Form a New Habit (backed by Science); Do the Painful Things First: and Start Small are just a few of these lessons.
I don’t receive any compensation for sharing this with you, but if you would like to try the app, here’s the link. (As I said before, at the time of this writing, the app was not yet available on Android, but James Clear reassures me that it will be available soon.)
